Ask, Seek, Knock – July reflections
What is it that you need and who do you seek after? My grandchildren love melon, honey dew melon and watermelon. When they were staying over this week my 2½ year old said: “Grandma, can I have melon please?” Of course it was a joy for me to grant his request. Firstly, it is good, healthy and nourishing so when he and his brother asked for more I was delighted to give them both. Secondly, he is at the stage where his eating is a bit particular, therefore, I was happy that he wanted food that was good for him. The bible encourages us:
“Ask, and it shall be given you, seek, and ye shall find, knock, and it shall be opened to unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” Matthew 7:7, 8, 1; Luke 11:9-10 KJV
God is our Heavenly Father and He is waiting to bless us. This month, this year, for the next five years, and the allotted time God has lent us, let’s petition the throne. The starting point is to begin with a desire, a goal, and a vision. England won the bid to host the Olympics and the planning started, now that was so many years ago Slowly the plans were set in motion, building work started, now we have Westfield, an expanse of shopping complex with a variety of goods to give you a shopping experience to remember. The Olympic village has been built and some sporting events have already had a trial run. This August [110 days as I am writing this], there will be a great deal of hustle and bustle, hurry and scurry of activity in Stratford East London, 2012 Olympics.
As with the temporal so it is with the spiritual. Ask God to direct our desires towards Him. Prayerfully submit our plans to Him. We must communicate with our Heavenly Father and tell Him our requests. Talk with Him about the longings and desires of our hearts. He is waiting and He invites us to commune with Him. When we pursue God with our whole heart He blesses us.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they shall be filled” Matthew 5:6 NKJV
When we desire to do what is right more than anything else we will be happy because God will fully satisfy us with His word, His blessings, and He will fulfil His promises to us and our generations. He knows our needs and our desires and He admonishes us: “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart” Psalms 37:4.NIV When we enjoy serving God, and our service to Him is a true delight, then He will give us the things that we need. The Psalmist David had his heart in the right place, he said:
“One thing have I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord to seek Him in His temple” Psalms 27:4 NIV
David couldn’t get enough of God. He wanted to be completely immersed in God’s presence. David experienced God as his Jehovah Jireh, provider, Jehovah Rohi, Shepherd, so will never allow us to suffer lack. He provides for us and takes care of us.
“My God will use His wonderful riches in Christ Jesus to give you everything you need” Philippians 4:19 NCV
God not only supplies our needs but He gives us more than what we need. “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine, according to the power that is at work within us…” Ephesians 3:20
Not only does God know our needs and will supply them, but He will bring supernatural blessings and overflow. When no one seems to care or understand, God understands and we are extremely valuable to Him. David reminds us:
“I have been young, and now I am old, Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor His descendants begging bread.” Psalm 37:25 NKJV
We are not forgotten and we will never be abandoned by our Heavenly Father. When we have toiled all night in tears and become wearied by life, God will provide an overflow of blessings.
“He said, throw your net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some. So they did and they caught so many fish they could not pull the net back into the boat” John 21:6 NCV
After we have gone through our long wearisome days and our valleys of suffering, God will show up. After we have toiled through dark nights of despair, God will come through for us in miraculous ways. He will give us grace to endure to the end.
“And God is able to make all grace [every favour and earthly blessing] come to you in abundance, so that you may always and under all circumstances and whatever the need be self-sufficient [possessing enough to require no aid or support and furnished in abundance for every good work and charitable donation].”
2 Corinthians 9:8 AMP
With the help of the Lord we can make it. God has prayed for us to be strengthened in our faith and Christian life.
“I have prayed that you will not lose your faith. Help your brothers be stronger when you come back to me” Luke 22:32 NCV
Ask God to help us to live right, walk right and obey His commands. May our desire be towards our Heavenly Father, to do his will and build His kingdom. Teach us Lord to do the things that honour you and bring glory to your name.
